Greenmeadow Primary School

Vision: Respect Ourselves, Grow Together, Learn Forever

INTENT

At Greenmeadow Primary school, we aim to provide an exciting, high-quality and progressive Geography education which will equip all our pupils with an understanding of the diverse world that we all live in and will inspire pupils to be curious about the world and the people in it, now and in the future. Using a broad and flexible approach including creative, first hand-experiences, all children will gain relevant knowledge and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As their understanding deepens, they should gain further insight into the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. As a school, we aim to nurture a love for the natural world and create excitement for future possibilities in geography, as mirrored in our approach to mental health.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Greenmeadow Primary School, we teach Geography through topic-based learning to ensure a broad and balanced curriculum where key skills are progressively taught and built upon helping children develop essential skills throughout their educational journey. Our structured progression of skills and clear roadmap enable both teachers and children to visualise their learning journey and understand how current topics are progressive and connected to previous years.

Across the school, every year group will study a geography-based unit in 3 terms of the year, taught weekly. Each unit is planned using the National Curriculum, which is then used to provide focused and progressive learning opportunities. We emphasise making connections between locational knowledge, human and physical geography and geographical skills and field work, modelling subject-specific vocabulary, knowledge and skills that are relevant to each unit of study.

To create memorable and impactful learning experiences, our geographers are provided with a variety of opportunities both in and out of the classroom. These first-hand experiences support and enrich their understanding of geographical contexts and events. There are many opportunities for fieldwork within the local area, as well as further afield, allowing all children to apply their geographical skills and understanding. People from within the community are also invited into school to help children deepen their sense of who they are and their place within the world.

IMPACT

We aim for:

+ Children to talk clearly about the places, locations, people and environments that they have studied in their current and previous years.

+ Children to apply their learning through fieldwork to their local community, helping to develop a sense of belonging.

+ Children to share their experiences of visitors from within the community and how this has widened their sense of who they are and their place within the world.

+ Children to apply their geographical skills, such as interpreting maps, asking questions, conducting research and evaluating different sources.

+ Children to demonstrate their ability to ask relevant questions.
