Greenmeadow Primary School

Vision: Respect Ourselves, Grow Together, Learn Forever

INTENT

At Greenmeadow, we follow a broad and flexible curriculum that is ambitious and exciting, designed to give all children the relevant knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life, now and in the future. Through our P.E. lessons, and a wide variety of additional activities and first-hand experiences, children are taught a progressive skills curriculum through a range of sports and inspired to show curiosity, resilience, problem-solving, team-work and independence.  PE is offered in such a way that makes it both accessible and challenging for all and ensures children are capable of accessing a variety of activities both inside and outside of school. Our varied and inclusive P.E. curriculum promotes fitness and positive mental health through a focus on leading healthy and active lifestyles, developing positive self-esteem and a range of opportunities for all.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Greenmeadow Primary School, children have twice weekly lessons of PE throughout the year, the first focused on core PE skills and the second participating in a specific sport. The PE skill lesson uses the Core element of the Real PE scheme, allowing the children to develop progressive fundamental movement skills (FUNS), which are then applied and transferred to a broad and balanced range of specific sports alongside the sport specific skills and rules. Weekly sport lessons expose children to a variety of sports, giving them first-hand experiences of sports to inspire now and future engagement and interest whilst practically utilising the FUN skills developed in PE lessons. Each term builds on a ‘COG’ (Personal, Social, Cognitive, Fitness, Creative and Physical) to make cross curricular links and develop wider skills. Children are introduced to a range of diverse champions for each sport, giving real-life role models intended to inspire.

As well as a whole school programme of sports, we offer a range of key stage appropriate enrichment opportunities from external providers as well as internal events which aim to promote an enjoyment of physical, outdoor learning. Additionally, we offer a range of after school sport clubs, which are broad in content and reflective of children’s interests. Swimming lessons, as a part of the curriculum, are provided in Year 4 and again, where required, in Key Stage 2 to support children to become confident swimmers. At Greenmeadow, we offer enrichment opportunities, both competitive and festival format, within lessons and with other schools across Swindon to implement the learnt skills in a meaningful and practical way.
