INTENT
At Greenmeadow, French is taught through a range of first-hand experiences and relevant opportunities where children link their French vocabulary to current learning through a range of speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. We aim to give all children an understanding of what it means to learn a new language through a progressive curriculum that supports and inspires cultural awareness and positive mental health. Children explore the similarities and differences between French and English on an exciting, broad and flexible learning journey. Through the creative study of a foreign language, children understand and appreciate different countries, cultures, people and communities now, and for the future.
IMPLEMENTATION
At Greenmeadow Primary School, MFL (French) is taught weekly following the Language Angels scheme of work from Year 3 onwards. Learning is delivered in sequences of lessons over a term. These lessons build on prior learning and knowledge alongside introducing new vocabulary and grammar in order to support children to be able to understand and communicate in French with increasing confidence over the Keystage. Key vocabulary is revisited through the years to support consolidation and vocabulary application. Displays, songs, games and visual prompts are used for support in lessons. Links are made to children’s daily lives, making the learning relevant to them. Pupils also develop their cultural awareness through learning about life in France and their customs and traditions.
IMPACT
We aim for:
+ All pupils to be able to listen to and respond to a range of questions with increasing vocabulary.
+ All pupils to be able to give personal responses using increasingly complex sentences and grammatical features.
+ All pupils to begin to develop spelling patterns within the French language and make comparisons with their own language.
+ All pupils to have an awareness of and develop their understanding of different cultures.
