Vision: Respect Ourselves, Grow Together, Learn Forever
PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education)
INTENT
PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) underpins all other subject areas through all children’s broad, ambition and exciting learning journey that is relevant for now and the future. We believe it is an important and necessary part of all pupil’s education. PSHE allows children to develop an awareness of who they are and how they can look after themselves and others, through first-hand experiences.
We use the progressive Jigsaw Scheme to support our teaching of PSHE with additional supplementary lessons based from our safeguarding curriculum and topical events. This scheme covers areas such as; drugs, alcohol and tobacco education, financial awareness, cyber and homophobic bullying, relationships, health education, mental health, body image and self-esteem. This scheme also allows for spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness to be explored throughout the year. Lessons are creative, discussion based, which inspires children to be curious so that they can learn more about themselves and others.
IMPLEMENTATION
At Greenmeadow Primary School, we prioritise Personal, Social, and Health Education (PSHE) as a foundational element of our curriculum, essential for fostering a broad, ambitious, and exciting learning journey relevant to our pupils now and in the future. We recognise that PSHE is vital for developing children's awareness of themselves and their ability to care for themselves and others through meaningful, first-hand experiences.
To effectively implement our PSHE curriculum, we conduct weekly lessons utilising the progressive Jigsaw Scheme, which provides a structured framework for teaching essential topics such as drugs, alcohol, and tobacco education, financial awareness, cyber and bullying, relationships, health education, mental health, body image, and self-esteem. This scheme is complemented by supplementary lessons derived from our safeguarding curriculum and current topical events, ensuring that our content is relevant and responsive to the needs of our students. Our PSHE lessons are designed to be creative and discussion-based, encouraging pupils to engage in thoughtful conversations that inspire curiosity and deeper understanding. By fostering an environment where students feel safe to express their thoughts and feelings, we support their social and emotional development.
Additionally, throughout the year, alongside weekly lessons, we weave in opportunities to explore spiritual, moral, social, and cultural awareness as well as British Values helping students to understand diverse perspectives and build empathy. This comprehensive approach ensures that all pupils not only learn about important life skills but also develop the confidence to navigate their world thoughtfully and responsibly.
