Greenmeadow Primary School

Vision: Respect Ourselves, Grow Together, Learn Forever

INTENT

At Greenmeadow Primary school, we aim to develop all children's natural excitement and curiosity whilst inspiring them to pursue scientific enquiry.  Throughout their primary years, within our science curriculum, children are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. Children will learn to make predictions and solve problems through our progressive curriculum, which is adapted and flexible to inspire all. We want to ensure that all children are taught the key knowledge and skills in the scientific disciplines of chemistry, physics and biology to develop a broad understanding of the world around them at an age-appropriate level and in line with the National Curriculum, that is both relevant to science now and in the future.

As a school, we aim to nurture a love for the natural world and create excitement for future possibilities in science with creative first-hand experiences, as mirrored in our approach to mental health.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Greenmeadow Primary School, our science curriculum is taught weekly through a science topic based approach, with students encouraged to engage in scientific enquiry, develop rational thinking, and explore natural phenomena in a way that builds their sense of wonder and excitement. Topics are planned over the year with relevant links made to other subjects.  Our curriculum covers the essential knowledge and skills in biology, chemistry, and physics, aligning with the National Curriculum and adapted to meet age-appropriate learning needs. Each unit is carefully designed to help students build foundational scientific skills, including making predictions, conducting experiments, and solving real-world problems. Children are encouraged to question, apply science skills and knowledge so that they can make links with, and build upon, prior learning. Additional STEM based activities are used to enrich the curriculum and to support children seeing real life applications of science. These hands-on learning experiences aim to instil a lifelong enthusiasm for science, preparing students to engage with the scientific developments of the future.

By emphasising the importance of understanding the world around them, our approach not only supports students in achieving academic goals but also nurtures their mental well-being by creating a positive, inspiring environment for exploration and discovery. Through first-hand experiences and a curriculum tailored to be inclusive and stimulating, we ensure every student at Greenmeadow Primary has the opportunity to thrive as a budding scientist.

IMPACT

We aim for:

  • Curiosity and a love for discovery in children.
  • A progressive curriculum, which develops critical thinking, problem-solving, and informed prediction skills.
  • Children gaining a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, and physics.
  • The curriculum to be inclusive and age-appropriate, helping students understand science's role in the world.
  • Hands-on learning and interactive approaches which enhance both academic success and mental well-being.
  • Children leaving as enthusiastic, confident learners, ready to continue their scientific journey with excitement and wonder.
